Simon Bridges

Simon Bridges is an esteemed politician, lawyer, and motivational speaker who has made a significant impact in both the public and private sectors.


As the youngest of six children, Simon grew up in a family where his father, of Māori and Pākehā descent, was a Baptist minister, and his mother, a primary school teacher. His early life in West Auckland laid the foundation for his diverse achievements.

Simon's academic journey includes a Bachelor of Arts in political science and history and a Bachelor of Laws (Hons) from the University of Auckland. His pursuit of knowledge led him to study at the London School of Economics and St Catherine's College, Oxford. He began his career as a litigation lawyer at Kensington Swan in Auckland before becoming a Crown prosecutor in Tauranga. His legal career was marked by handling serious criminal jury trials.

His transition to politics was significant, representing Tauranga as a Member of Parliament from the 2008 election to May 2022. During his political career, Simon held several key positions, including Minister for Consumer Affairs, Associate Minister of Transport, and Associate Minister for Climate Change Issues. He then moved into the Cabinet as Minister of Labour and Minister of Energy and Resources. His time in politics was highlighted by his role as Leader of the National Party and Leader of the Opposition, where he became the first person with Māori ancestry to lead a major party in New Zealand.

After retiring from politics, Simon penned his memoir, "National Identity," which became a bestseller and received critical acclaim. The book is a reflection on his life and views on what it means to be a New Zealander. Today, Simon balances his commercial and media work with family life, enjoying time with his wife, Natalie, and their children. He indulges in hobbies like playing drums, enjoying red wine, and immersing himself in podcasts and reading.
