Laura Tupou

Laura Tupou is an award-winning journalist and lead anchor of Newhub's flagship 6pm weekend news bulletin.


During the week she delivers breaking news and in-depth investigative pieces for the programme. She’s covered all manner of events, including Prince Harry & Meghan’s visit to Tonga and New Zealand; the devastation of cyclone Gabrielle in Hawkes bay; and, the aftermath of the March 15 Christchurch terror attacks where she kept Al Jazeera’s international audience up-to-date. She has conducted live-crosses in all manner of settings, ranging from the studio to a stadium fully packed with league fans, and to a live audience through CNN.

 

Laura has a depth of experience across many formats and styles. She was seconded to co-host Three’s 6-9am breakfast programme AM in 2023 where she regularly conducted live interviews of the Prime Minister, and other government and opposition MPs. The programme comprises planned and ad-libbed sections, depending on the news of the day and characteristics of the live interviewees. Laura is known for her relaxed and professional demeanour. She is relatable, enjoys humour, and will pivot seamlessly to the hard questions as the situation requires. 

 

Laura featured as co-host on Three’s primetime 7pm news and entertainment show The Project in 2021, where she covered Kanoa Lloyd’s maternity leave. She beamed into living rooms when the nation was locked down during the pandemic, and at one stage found herself hosting solo (with 15-minutes warning to on-air) when her colleagues had were sent into isolation. She was also a featured guest journalist on the opening show of Patrick Gower Has Issues.
